Lake Ballard

Lake Ballard

Western Australia inundated with salt lakes or flats from south to north; One of our favourites is Lake Ballard, Menzies being Northern Goldfields region of the Golden Outback. You can reach Lake Ballard by 2WD car in one hour and 45 minutes from Kalgoorlie or 45 minutes from Menzies; remember heat of outback some gravel road and load of vehicle so a AWD or 4WD location appropriate.

"Discover a region where art and culture flourish, history breathes through every street, and vast landscapes glow beneath breathtaking sunsets."

Sir Antony Gormley travelled to the tiny town of Menzies and persuaded 51 locals (and a few drop-ins) to strip naked. He then digitally scanned their bodies, made life-size moulds cast into carbonised steel alloy.

'Inside Australia'(2003) was born and placed within the western end of Lake Ballard touching peripheries from any angle creating own vestige. Gormley stated ‘I wanted to try to find the human equivalent for this geological place. I think human memory is part of place, and place a dimension of memory.'

Such can be interpreted from the ironstone viewing point at western end; 360 degrees and 30km span of Ballard, one can interpret Gormley's vision of people tracing there own existence hence being involved creating ephemeral casts and shadows existing within nature and canvas of Lake Ballard.
